How the Access 2 Card program is changing Canadian entertainment for good

Zachary is seen with a comical look on his face while wearing a dark grey Canada branded hoodie. His Access 2 card is stuck to the middle of his forehead. The Easter Seals and Access 2 logos are to the right of him with the words below “How the Access 2 Card program is changing Canadian entertainment for good.”

Overview

Are you tired of feeling left out of the entertainment scene because of your disability? Well, have no fear because the Access 2 Card program is here! Launched in 2004 with support from Cineplex Entertainment and a group of national disability organizations, the Access 2 Card program has grown to include over 100,000 Canadians with disabilities and over 500 participating partner venues across the country.

Easter Seals Canada, the organization behind the program, is a national charitable organization that works to create a more inclusive and accessible society for people of all abilities. They offer programs, services, and issues-leadership and development for the disability community Canada-wide.

How it works

To use the Access 2 Card, follow these simple steps:

  1. Show the Access 2 card to the venue's staff upon arrival.

  2. Pay the regular admission price for the cardholder with a permanent disability.

  3. The cardholder will be entitled to receive 1 complimentary or discounted admission for their support person.

Please note that this information is based on the general usage of the Access 2 Card program, specific offers and discounts may vary from venue to venue.

The Access 2 Card program not only benefits individuals with disabilities, but also their caregivers by providing them with free admission. As a person with a physical disability, it was and continues to be a refreshing change to only have to pay for my own ticket, as opposed to covering the cost for the person accompanying me. In my opinion, this program in a roundabout way, recognizes the sacrifices and hard work of caregivers and is a great example that more venues should follow.

How much does it cost?

The Access 2 card is an innovative and affordable way to gain access to a wide variety of participating locations over a prolonged period of time. With three different length options available – 3-years, 5-years, or 7-years – it's easy to find the right plan for you. The cost for the 3-year option is just $20, and for the 5-year option it is $30. All Access 2 cards are valid at all participating venues during that time.

How to apply

To apply for an Access 2 Card, follow these steps:

  1. Fill out the application form by completing "Section B - Applicant Information" and make sure to check the "New Card" box. "Section C - Health Care Professional Authorization" must be completed by an authorized healthcare professional. Refer to the form for a list of accepted professionals.

  2. Make a payment by either paying online with a credit card, Visa debit card, or PayPal account, or by mailing a cheque or money order. Paying online is recommended to receive the card faster.

  3. Submit the completed application form by mail, fax or e-mail. If submitting by fax or e-mail, the administration fee must be paid online before sending the application. For mailed applications, include the cheque or money order or pay online before mailing.

The cost for a new 3-year card is $20, or $30 for a new 5-year card.

My personal experience

As someone who has personally benefited from the Access 2 Card program, I can attest to its awesomeness. In my younger years, when I was on AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped), the program made it possible for me to go to a movie every now and again with my friends without breaking the bank on a tight budget. Not only did it save me money, but it also helped me to feel included and be a typical teenager.

Overall, the Access 2 Card program is an amazing initiative that helps to ensure that entertainment, cultural and recreational opportunities are more available and accessible to all. I highly recommend checking out Easter Seals Canada and the program for yourself.
