Danielle Smith has proposed to re-index Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH), ultimately granting Albertans an additional $100 per AISH payment. This is certainly a step in the right direction; however, I believe that we must continue to push for more substantial increases to combat inflation.

To address rising costs of living, Smith has announced that AISH and other provincial programs will receive an increase in benefits starting January 1st, 2023. With these changes being reflected on the December 22nd cheques, this is a long overdue measure that will undoubtedly bring some relief to those receiving this type of assistance during these challenging times. In order to truly make a difference, however, we must continue advocating for even greater improvements to AISH and other safety net programs in the province. Only then can we ensure that those who need support are receiving the assistance they deserve.

As of January 1, 2023, Albertans receiving quarterly benefits from the Alberta Child and Family Benefit will see a 6% increase in their payments for February. Similarly, those on the Alberta Seniors Benefit will also be receiving an increase in their January benefit cheques. This increase is part of an effort to keep up with inflationary pressures and ensure that Albertans can maintain their standard of living.
